If you’re looking to purchase life insurance, you’ll already have seen a huge variety of providers to choose from, some even with similar products at similar price points.
In order to distinguish themselves from the competition, many insurance companies offer a variety of gifts to attract new customers. In this article we’ll look at the type of free gifts available to life insurance customers in 2020, and the conditions under which they’ll need to qualify. The most common type of gift offered is in the form of a gift card for a number of international and nationwide retailers.
Of course whilst free gifts are enticing, they should not form the primary basis on which you choose your life insurance provider/product. Life insurance is an important and costly commitment in the first place, and it is imperative that first and foremost, the policy terms and coverage amounts meet your needs.
The free gifts are certainly a “nice to have”, but one’s attention should primarily be centred on the policy’s key conditions, and monthly premiums. If you find policies similar across the board however, perhaps a free gift will sway your mind one way or the other.

Double your nectar points and add up to ninety pounds of value to your nectar card. Sainsbury’s is not just your local supermarket. When it comes to life insurance, it can also help provide the right cover, looking after your dependents when they need it most. If you are a nectar card holder and a regular Sainsbury’s shopper, then the gift offered with their life insurance product could be for you. Sainsbury’s life insurance has two elements to their gift offering: as well as giving you double Nectar card points, Sainsbury’s will also add up to ninety pounds worth of points to your Nectar card.
Your Nectar points will be worth twice as much as before from the date your policy starts.
After five months of paid premium, policyholders will receive a one-off bonus of up to ninety pounds of Nectar points. The number of points earned will relate to the cost of your premium and policy purchased. So:
If your monthly premium is under £8.50, you will receive Fifty Pounds worth of Nectar points (10,000)
If your monthly premium is £8.50 – £20, you will receive Seventy Pounds worth of Nectar points (14,000)
If your monthly premium is over £20, you will receive Ninety Pounds worth of Nectar points (18,000)
The important bits: double points begin from your policy start date, and you'll receive your points within 60 days after you have paid 5 months' premiums. Points will be awarded for no more than 2 policies per household in any 12 month period and Sainsbury’s must be told of your Nectar card number upon application.
Earn an Amazon, Argos, or Marks and Spencer Gift Card of Fifty Pounds. The Post Office does more than send your mail, it also has a host of financial services available including life insurance, and at competitive prices too. When you purchase a life insurance policy with the Post Office, you also qualify for a fifty pound gift card. This gift voucher, whilst less than other insurance companies’ incentives, is however redeemable at more vendors. There are three retailers the gift card is applicable to: Marks and Spencer, Argos, and Amazon.
In order to qualify for this free gift, the policyholder must have paid a minimum of six months premium (consecutively). After holding said policy for six months, the gift voucher will be sent out within the following 28 days. Many free gifts are restricted to one per household. However, this offer (whilst being one gift voucher per policy) is two gift cards per household. There is also more flexibility in accessing this offer. Many of the offers here are from purchasing online only. The Post Office allows you to obtain this offer not just online, but also over the phone and in branches across the UK.
The important bits: only one gift voucher per policy, two per household, with a six month qualifying period.

Various savings and discounts with Vitality’s reward partners. Vitality places an emphasis on being “positively different”, and the insurance policies they offer encourage their policyholders to maintain a healthy lifestyle. In the same vein, Vitality life insurance doesn’t offer new customers an upfront gift in the same way as other providers. Rather than a straightforward gift card or voucher, Vitality has established partnerships that offer their policyholders a way of attaining and sustaining that healthy lifestyle more easily.
It is important to note that these rewards and benefits are only available with certain Vitality plans and products, and not at every level of life insurance policy.
To be eligible for the best range of rewards, one must:
Life Insurance | Life Insurance with Vitality Optimiser | |
Monthly Eligible Premium to Pay | £8 | £45 (single)

In-store vouchers in participating Co-Op stores of Fifty Pounds. Co-op offers several life insurance policies that can help give financial relief to your loved ones on your passing. Life insurance purchased with the Coop Insurance Service also comes with £50 of Co-op food vouchers. If this supermarket is your local food shop, this might be the gift for you. For some, the gift vouchers included with other life policies might not be as useful.
Another thing to note is that the Co-op life insurance policy is underwritten by Royal London who themselves don’t offer a free gift on policy purchase. So if you’re keen to have a policy backed by Royal London, this could be an alternative with a small bonus.
In addition, most free gifts from other insurer providers have a minimum waiting time of six months; Co-op life is only four before you can claim your gift.
The important bits: gifts can be purchased either online or over the phone. One voucher per policy, with vouchers only valid in Co-Op branded stores. Currently valid on policies purchased up to 30th June 2020, eligibility for free gift after four months of paid premiums.
